Working with NICE to embed UX skills in their service design

By Justin Darley | 24/08/2015

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) works to improve outcomes for people using the NHS and other public health and social care services. They do this by:

  • Producing evidence-based guidance and advice for health, public health and social care practitioners
  • Developing quality standards and performance metrics for those delivering health, public health and social care services
  • Providing a range of informational services for commissioners, practitioners and managers across the spectrum of health and social care

To continue this work to a high standard and better understand and support their user base, NICE aims to embed user research and testing in their online service design. As a first step in this process, NICE’s team recently attended Sigma’s UX techniques and tools training. Their Head of Design, Fritz von Runte commented:

“We’re doing what we can to educate the organisation about how important User Research and User Testing are, for User Centred Product Development. We want to engage the whole organisation, to have a truly multi-disciplinary and collaborative product development mentality. I think Sigma’s training course will give my team a realistic overview of the all the stages of the Design Cycle”

The course was led by Justin Darley, a senior UX consultant who has worked on a range of public, not for profit and private sector client UX strategies for Sigma. We designed the course to offer practical help on how to research and test with real people to get useful outcomes. Justin said:

“It’s wonderful to see user experience being so enthusiastically embraced by such a crucial body with the ability to make real differences to health and social care. The team were genuinely excited about the possibilities and I’m looking forward to hearing about their progress.”

Feedback on the session from the team has been great and we look forward to working further with NICE. Fritz will be speaking at our Camp Digital event on the 23rd April if anyone would like to hear more about the approach NICE is taking:

Courses are available on a public or tailored basis from Sigma on a range of subjects, including Introduction to UX, Designing User Interfaces, Writing for the Web, Creative Workshop Facilitation and Collaborative Rapid Prototyping.
